- W221763823 abstract "In Search of a Nation: Histories of Authority and Dissidence in Tanzania. Edited by Gregory H. Maddox and James L. Giblin. Eastern African Studies. Athens: Ohio University Press, and Oxford: James Currey, 2005. Pp. xiv, 337. $55.00 cloth, $26.95 paper. This tribute to Professor I. N. Kimambo brings together sixteen essays by historians and anthropologists in a wide-ranging reexamination of the history and politics of nation building and dissent in Tanzania. In the introduction the editors argue that this work is a departure from older interpretations of the nation in Tanzanian history. Even if the nation is imagined it is a fundamental reality as was clearly seen in the events of late 1999 following the death of Mwalimu Julius K. Nyerere. The other side of the argument, that nationalism in the African context is a hollow shell, can be supported through a close examination of the public discourse of the ruling party, Chama cha Mapinduzi, which routinely coopts and undermines critics through resort to the rhetoric of peace and unity. Thus nationalism in Tanzania is double-sided, both inspiring unity and closing down debate. Yet under the surface an enormous variety of political tendencies, debates, and identities coexist, the fruits of Tanzanian history. Some of these are old, predating colonialism although reconstructed under indirect rule. Others are the result of religious change, especially the spread of Islam and Christianity, and the experience of migrant labor and urbanization. The essays in this book are an attempt to make connections between the assertions of political authority, control over knowledge and culture, and emergence of dissident forms of politics. Thus the older conception of an expansion of scale of the nation is to be replaced by a view that sees the nation as formed through contestation and debate around the legitimacy and limits of power, particularly under colonial rule, but also after independence. The editors, therefore, present an alternative to the influential ideas of Basil Davidson, Mahmoud Mamdani, James Scott, and the earlier generation of Tanzanian historians. So far so good. But whether the colonial in Tanganyika, attempting to channel all political activity into the legitimate structures that it had established itself, can be described as a state is highly debatable (p. 6). There was little that was truly liberal in this context, at least before the mid-1950s, as one of the contributors, James R. Brennan, suggests. Most of the book concentrates on the British period in Tanganyika, but two very suggestive pieces highlight the socially composed character of leadership, authority, and ideology in the late precolonial period. Steven Feierman deconstructs a royal ritual of accession in the Shambaa kingdom involving coordinated but dispersed forms of knowledge, while Edward A. Alpers pieces together the career of a Luguru chief, Kingalu, who drew on local clan leadership and power over rainmaking as well as, surprisingly, coastal Muslim identity, in order to create his power base. What is really new in many of the essays is the emphasis on the local and the discordant, as well as an examination of the linkages between neotraditional forms of politics that emerged under indirect rule and the politics of mass nationalism. …" @default.
