- W2217759345 abstract "For the purposes of shape optimization of engineering components a computer program named SKO (Soft Kill Option) was developed at Forschungszentrum Karlsruhe based on the FiniteElements-Method. The optimization process is similar to the biomechanical growth mechanism of bones. It enables the user to find a lightweight shape for a structure according to given boundaries and a given loading situation. In a FE-model the Young's moduli are modified step by step according to the calculated von-Mises stress distribution. The higher the stress is in an element, the higher the Young's modulus of that element becomes (up to a given limit). The lower the stress is, the lower the Young's modulus becomes, until it is so low, that the element performs no longer a stress-bearing role. It is then ,,killed. This method is able to simulate biological growth as well, because in many other cases beside the growth of bones biological growth is mechanically influenced. One of the main functions of tree roots is a mechanical one, that is to anchor the plant in the soil against wind loading. Using the law by Mohr-Coulomb the SKO method was extended to soil mechanics. For the understanding of natural foundations it was of great interest to predict the optimum morphology of plant roots. With this method studies were made on the influence of the type of loading on the mechanically efficient root shape. In fact, the results of this calculations comply with the root forms of exemplarily investigated trees." @default.
