- W2218447466 abstract "The construction industry consists of a very large number of participants performing numerous tasks/activities during the life-cycle of a project which involve the use of many pieces of information. Such information is spread without any structure or classification across a wide spectrum of disciplines. This leads to many problems in terms of information modelling, handling, integration and management. It is envisaged in this paper that the use of strategic modelling will allow the construction industry to improve the structure of its information, thus answering the questions often raised in construction circles such as 'where do we start when we model information for a complex environment such as that of construction?' and 'how do we make sure that information is integrated and shared across a wide range of disciplines?' Strategic modelling will aid the definition of a top level view of the information architecture which will form the starting point for a consistent information base which has capability for expansion. This top level model should take into account the strategic views of the business or industry, thus establishing an alignment between the business requirements and the information architecture at the strategic level. Factors such as business mission, business objectives, business plan, critical success factors etc. should be assessed in accordance with the information required. This paper is addressing the issue of strategic modelling rather than the strategic planning of construction information using state of the art modelling techniques namely, Information Engineering and Object Oriented Analysis and Design within a CASE tool environment. The use of such techniques will ensure that the construction industry is strategically modelling its information for competitive advantage. This approach to strategic modelling is being adopted by the ICON group at Salford University in order to develop a reliable and solid framework for an integrated database for the construction industry as a whole." @default.
