- W2218454311 abstract "In April 1936, the sixty-six-year-old Revd Dr M. G. Daniel astonished a congregation of Assyrian émigrés at St Andrew’s Episcopal Church in New York.1 Accompanied by three detectives, he marched to the pulpit of the Revd Emmanuel Awdisho, a relative and rival twenty years his junior. Midway through benediction, Daniel accused Awdisho of stealing $1,126 from him, and of being of a charlatan who profited from the donations of credulous Christians. The disagreement was an old one, stretching back to 1911, when the two had first clashed over money, in Cape Town. Daniel and the detectives hauled the accused to the police station and relieved him of his vestments. There, Daniel insulted the hapless Awdisho with ‘vile names’, and helped orchestrate a beating. Awdisho was forced to sign a confession under threats to his life. Daniel promised to retrieve incriminating evidence of Awdisho’s guilt from the French consul. Court proceedings dragged on for two years. Awdisho claimed wrongful arrest but ultimately failed to convince the jury that he was an ordained priest. The jury were not aware of it, but Awdisho was known to Scotland Yard as a bogus cleric who had travelled through Europe and the Americas under many aliases, and ‘a good revolver shot … generally armed’.2 But Daniel, unhelpfully, had disappeared; he had left New York for a bohemian neighbourhood of Philadelphia without substantiating the accusations of theft. Awdisho was sent to Ellis Island for deportation, but the New York authorities, like many before them, lost track of the elusive Daniel. Daniel’s career — manoeuvring amid the opportunities and limits of globalization from the 1880s until his death in 1950 — forms the subject of this article, and offers alternative ways of thinking about transnational mobility." @default.
