- W2219343037 abstract "Introduction: Successful self-care for children and young people with long term conditions involves children and young people communicating their health experiences and needs to their families, peers, health professionals and teachers. Communication of health issues is recognised as a self-care skill that needs to be learnt and many self-care support programmes for children and young people include communication skills training. This paper will examine the communication related experiences of children and young attending self-care support programmes.Methods: Semi-structured interviews with children and young people and parents as part of a case study evaluating different models of self-care support. Interviews were analysed using the Framework Approach.Findings: 26 young people and 31 parents were interviewed. Children and young people lacked confidence in disclosing their condition to their peers and experienced difficulties in explaining their condition and articulating bodily sensations. This created barriers to becoming independent. Self-care support programmes were valued for providing an opportunity to interact with other children and young people with long-term conditions which increased self-confidence and enabled them to access peer support. Participants identified how self-care support programmes developed young peoples? communication skills with doctors, nurses and teachers. Discussion: There was some diversity in children and young people?s level of comfort in discussing their long-term condition which suggests that communication may not always be dependent on skill or ability but on self-confidence and personal preferences. Children and young people?s participation in triadic health care consultations is known to be limited to social interaction ? further research is required to assess the impact of communication skills training on their participation in consultations. Practice implications: Health professionals need to facilitate children and young peoples? experiences and development of self-efficacy in communicating their health related issues." @default.
