- W2220223861 abstract "Textual Authority and Works of Hoccleve, Lydgate, and Henryson. Chaucer's legacy to fifteenth century included what A. C. Spearing has called the idea of English poetry. Chaucer explored this idea in his comments on relations between his texts and literary traditions which they further. Hoccleve, Lydgate, and Henryson responded variously to Chaucer's explorations of textual authority and of concept of an authorial book that a vernacular writer translates or extends. To Hoccleve, issue is apparently of little concern, inasmuch as thrust of much of his work is not traditional but contemporary and topical: his works often rest on authority of history. Lydgate was evidently struck by importance of issue in Chaucer's works, since it figures prominently in several of his compositions; but even in Siege of Thebes he uses idea of book as little more than a metrical filler.
