- W2220921433 abstract "Sandground (1928) described this species from material found in a cacique, a bird of South and Central America. I have found the same species of parasite in a cardinal, Richmondea cardinalis, from the Brazos River bottoms near De Walt, Texas. Only two birds from this locality were examined and both were heavily infested, one having 24 females in the wall of the proventriculus, the other 10. As described by Sandground the males were most often found in the cysts with the females, but a few were free in the lumen of the proventriculus. With one exception the original description seems to be quite accurate. Sandground has described a single median row of cuticular spines. Frequently the male body is so twisted as to give such an impression. In glycerine jelly mounts or, indeed, in live specimens it is extremely difficult to detect the two rows, and it was not until I had studied the parasites in phenol cleared preparations that I observed the paired submedian rows. In these preparations it was also possible to trace the spines to the esophageal region, though in other types of mounts I could not discover any in the anterior third of the body. My thanks are due to Dr. Sandground for the loan of the type specimens, thus making this identification possible." @default.
