- W2221836700 abstract "In 1923 the Dalcroze Society of Great Britain planned a tour to Australia to promote the Eurhythmics of Emile Jaques-Dalcroze. The London Dalcroze School, celebrating its first ten years, offered scholarships to attract Australian students to its three year course. Lecture-Demonstrations and short courses were presented in Perth, Adelaide, Sydney and Hobart, and a two week Summer School was conducted in Melbourne at the Teacher's College, Carlton. New Zealand was also visited. The group was led by Ethel Driver accompanied by two Australians, recently graduated. One was Tasmanian Cecilia John, who had been active in Melbourne's feminist and political life during World War 1. The other was South Australian kindergartener, Heather Gell. The musical, artistic and physical education aspects of Dalcroze's innovative system were well publicised through the press and attracted many participants. Summer Schools, in vogue overseas, were relatively new developments for teachers in Australia keen to extend their skills beyond short 'Courses of Instruction'. The tour received vice-regal patronage and sessions were chaired by leading educators including various State Directors of Education. As a result of the tour there was an upsurge of interest in this approach to musicianship. Four states formed Dalcroze Societies and four Australian women went overseas to undertake the full course, in late 1924. This paper surveys this promotional tour, and poses questions regarding the consequences. Dalcroze Eurhythmics has had a considerable influence at various times in the history of music education in Australia, and contemporary music educators could gain from reflection on the early proponents and the effort they put into introducing it to schools." @default.
