The mixing layer produced in the exhaust of air from a square nozzle 40 40 cm into a quiescent atmosphere was investigated. The exhaust velocity was 4 and 8 m/see. The temperature difference in the mixing layer was 15~ The measurements were performed at 30 cm from the nozzle exit. When investigating the wake behind the cylinder, a rectangular nozzle 30 50 em was used. 'I~e diameter of the cylinder was d=8 mm; the cylinder was mounted across the short end of the nozzle. Theexhaust velocity was 15 m/see. The cylinder was heated to a temperature of 500~ The measurements were performed at a distance of 42 cm from the cylinder. In this section the maximum temperature of the wake exceeded the temperature of the flow by 3~ Measurements of the mean velocity and the velocity fluctuations in the wake behind a cold cylinder indicated that in this section the heating of the cylinder has a negligible effect on the flow characteristics. The velocity and temperature measurements and also an analog treatment of the signals were performed with the use of equipment made by the D1SA firm. In the velocity measurements we used a probe with two parallel tungsten filaments 5 p in diameter and 1.2 mm long. One of the filaments operated with high superheating (0.8) and acted as the velocity meter, and the second operated with low superheating and served to compensate for the measurement of the flow temperature. The frequency range of the equipment inthe velocity measurements was 30 kHz. The temperature measurements employed a probe with a platinum wire 1 g in diameter and 0.4 mm long. The thermoanemometer operated as a resistance thermometer without compensation for the thermal inertia of the wire. This method allowed us to record temperature fluctuations with a frequency up to 3 fritz." @default.
