- W2225101234 abstract "Although the crab, Eriocheir japonicus, is the principal host for Para- gonimus westermani on Taiwan, the parasite was found in four species. Random samplings of E. japonicus from different parts of Taiwan indicated low overall meta- cercarial infections with the majority of positive sites being in the northern part of the island. Monthly collections in a highly endemic area, however, showed rates of infection to range from 30 to 83% with a tendency toward higher infections in the fall and winter months, the time at which these crabs are consumed by man. In several collections, 100% of crabs were infected. Metacercariae per host ranged from 4.2 parasites in summer months to 8.6 in the winter. Cysts of P. westermani appar- ently accumulate in the crab until time of death, with as many as 1,043 cysts re- corded from one host. In 1915, Nakagawa, who had accompanied the Japanese occupation forces into Taiwan, for the first time reported the occurrence of lung fluke, Paragonimus westermani, in freshwater crabs on the island (Yokogawa et al., 1960). Appar- ently Faust (1928) was the first westerner to study paragonimiasis on Taiwan as a result of his visit in 1927 to the same mountainous areas in which Nakagawa had previously found the infection common among the aborigines. Although there have been many investigations by Japanese parasitologists, and there have been a number of studies in the past decade, there still remain poorly understood or unknown facets in the epidemiological and epizootological aspects of para- gonimiasis. The U. S. Navy has included paragonimiasis in long-term, broad- range investigations concerned with the more important helminth infections common to Taiwan and southeast Asia. The present report is based upon survey type investigations which were made to determine the distribution of P. westermani on the island as judged by the occurrence of the parasite in the second intermediate hosts. Particular attention was given to a study of the parasite in the crab, Eriocheir japonicus, in a restricted drainage area which was discovered early in the course of multifaceted para- sitological surveys. Epidemiological investigations were continued for more than three years to determine the mechanism of disease transmission and maintenance. Emphasis was placed on the biological aspects of parasitism by P. westermani demonstrated in snails, crabs, in lower mammalian hosts, and in man." @default.
