- W2227353648 abstract "Arctic char (Salvelinus alpinus) is one of the most respected fish in sport fishing and for food. However it is not fully exploited in Finland, because of the problems in aquaculture and decreased natural populations. Global warming can complicate even more cultivation of Arctic char, because it is cold water species. In future, may be possible to use transgenic fish species in aquaculture, because of new features and improved aquaculture efficiency. Goal of this study was to find out how bacterial hemoglobin coded by VHb-transgene affects oxygen consumption and growth of Arctic char. Effects of the transgene were studied by measuring fish’s oxygen consumption in three different temperatures (8, 12 and 16 °C). I also made growth experiment at 14 °C were I compared transgenic and control fishes growth rate and feeding efficiency. In this study, we did not find any significant differences between transgenic and control fishes. Perhaps gene is not expressed ergo bacterial haemoglobin is not produced correctly in used conditions or transgene does not affect studied characteristics of individuals. However this warrants further studies." @default.
