- W222767844 abstract "In 1976 the NCTE Standing Committee on Teacher Preparation and Certification published A Statement on the Preparation of Teachers of English. While this document referred implicitly to all of English and arts, many elementary school teachers, most of whom regarded themselves as generalists rather than English per se, did not perceive the Statement as being addressed to them. However, an examination of the Statement indicates clearly that, both in its underlying philosophy, and in the areas of knowledge, abilities, and attitudes it prescribes, it provides a pertinent and valuable document for elementary and for those responsible for their professional education. Before examining the significance of the Statement for of in the elementary school, two terms, teachers and language arts need to be defined in terms of the Statement's philosophy. What is a teacher? As we move into the 1980s there seems to be a promising move away from the skills orientation of the past decades toward a more eclectic view of education. It is no longer enough for the teacher to be merely an artisan, skilled in manipulating the tools of the trade, assisted by skills lists, pre-packaged teacherproof materials, and modern technology. The teacher for the 1980s must be a well trained professional educator, who can facilitate children's healthy growth and development in ways that will enable them to live successfully in our complex modern society.
