• W2227802140 abstract "In this paper, we investigate the role played by the internal capital markets of bank holding companies in the distribution of the Troubled Asset Relief Program (TARP) funds. Our results suggest that TARP bank holding participants transferred more capital to bank subsidiaries with higher needs generated by regulatory requirements. Smaller bank subsidiaries with relatively lower level of capital were more likely to receive larger transfers of capital. We find evidence that bank holding companies used capital transfers to avoid increased regulatory scrutiny and revision of their dividend policies. Our results indicate that regulatory motive had a stronger impact on the distribution of funds to bank subsidiaries made by TARP participants than non-participants." @default.
