It was only decades ago that the study of art history began to emerge from the traditional biological approach to become a highly academic and scientific professional subject. Such a development was largely due to the efforts made by Wen Fong, a Chinese art historian living in the US. Drawing references from Western methodologies, Fong put forward new methods to reconstruct a reliable history of Chinese painting best suited to its nature. This paper highlights Fong's scholarship in relation to his emphasis on authentication and stylistic analysis, and discusses how he sees the past and future of Chinese art from a cultural perspective so as to make an evaluation of his contributions to the study of Chinese painting." @default.
