- W2229214904 abstract "The use of higher-level languages can greatly facilitate the use of the computer. As with other highly repetitive processes, computers have been used in the role of translators which convert these higher-level languages into machine languages. The increase in the number of languages which users desire has prompted the study of how these translation programs can be built automatically.A great deal has already been accomplished towards the mechanization of the compiler creation process. It is already possible to create a parser automatically for a large class of languages. Thre are several different methods by which this is usually accomplished. In one method, the LR(k) method, parsers can be created for the class of deterministic context-free languages. However, the resulting parser is often too large to be useful. The method of Recursive Descent produces small parsers but there are languages of interest for which no Recursive Descent parser can be built. The focus of this research is a new type of parser which we call an Augmented Predictive parser. These parsers extend the Recursive Descent technique by making available more state information than is available in Recursive Descent parsers. This extra state information gives the Augmented Predictive parsers considerably more power. In fact, after providing a suitable formalism to describe the new parsers, we show that these Augmented Predictive parsers are just as powerful as the LR(k) parsers. We then proceed to give a method by which an Augmented Predictive parser may be obtained from a deterministic context-free grammar. Last, we show that, there are many cases where our parsers have considerable size advantages over parsers produced by other current techniques." @default.
