• W2229561837 abstract "Objective: To assess the prevalence of involvement of nutritional status and associated factors in a sample of JIA patients. Methods: One hundred and sixteen patients were studied with JIA diagnosed according to ILAR/1997 criteria. The percentiles of body mass index (BMI) and triceps skin fold (TSF) and the Z-score for height were determined according to the World Health Organization. Low weight and low adiposity were considered present when BMI and TSF were below the 5 percentile. Short stature was defined by a Z-score of height for age less than –2. The serum level of IGF-1 was measured by radioimmunoassay. Results: The prevalences of low weight and low adiposity were 16.4% and 20.7%, respectively. Short stature was observed in 10.4% of the cases. Low serum level of IGF-1 was only found in 10 patients (8.6%). Factors significantly associated with the reduction of the Z-score of stature were polyarticular subtype, disease duration and activity. A multiple linear regression model showed that these variables were associated independently and additively to short stature. However, they were not associated with the percentiles of BMI and TSF. The cumulative dose of glucocorticoids did not present a significant correlation with the nutritional parameters. Conclusions: Patients with JIA often have a compromised nutritional status. Disease activity, duration and subtype are factors independently associated with short stature in these patients. The cumulative dose of glucocorticoids was not an independent risk factor for short stature or other nutritional parameters.
