- W2230718722 abstract "This paper is an outcome of ownership concentration measurement in Portuguese and Brazilian generalistic newspaper industries. The undertaked research on ownership concentration in these two markets had two main goals, firstly, intended to evaluate the extent to which ownership concentration may be compromising fundamental social values, such as, diversity of voices, freedom of speech and the right of free access to information; secondly, aims to feature as a instrument to map ownership concentration in the media in general. This outcome also synthesizes the results of two main projects about ownership concentration in media, namely: (i) the average concentration around the world, coordinated by Eli Noam of Columbia University and published by Oxford University Press; (ii) concentration property and media pluralism in Portugal and in Brazil, coordinated by Paulo Faustino and funded by the Foundation for Science and Technology (Portugal). Methodologically, it has been used a cross-research and an empirical approach, other complementary studies performed by the authors on markets' official data (advertising and circulation averages), and it has been applied quantitative scales (such as HHI, CR and Noam Index) to measure the ownership concentration in the newspaper markets, in order to evaluate concrete on-line news market concentration’ levels in Portugal and Brazil. Overall, the paper reports a multidisciplinary research on ownership concentration that can be replicated as a case study for further investigation on this current topic. The main conclusions can also be extended to all media in general. This research demonstrated that it is important to have a holistic perspective on the media market. As it happens throughout the so-called developed world, the media industry has been marked in recent years by major corporate mergers and partnerships. These dynamics resulted, in a small number, of large economic groups (as we will see forward), which own a significant share of the media. In this context, discussions about media concentration are increasingly pertinent. Thus, in different spheres of society – political, legal, academic, and public space in general – there are various opinions about this phenomenon. It is possible, still, to outset affirm that the positioning assumed (by institutions, companies and citizens) shows, in general, two main hypotheses that admit or reject a scenario of business concentration. Another trend, more optimistic, argues that concentration is a natural process, and even inevitable, in the context of a gradual globalized free market economy. Mergers and partnerships are, in this framework, strategies for efficient growth, in the sense that they reduce operating costs and, at the same time, expand the range of products offered to the public, thus extending the range of items available to consumers. A second trend, though, looks at the phenomenon of concentration as a danger to democracy and freedom of speech. This trend argues that, being concentrated in the hands of a few stakeholders, the media have their pluralism constrained and its content ends up being guided solely by profit, in a blind struggle for audiences and advertising investments. Nevertheless, it is secure to observe that nowadays media companies are exposed to a constant process of change, due to important modifications in their sphere of influence. In an academic context, the topic of ownership concentration has traditionally been included in the scope of industrial economy. Notwithstanding, the field of economics and management applied to the media sector has progressively demarcated its own grounds within the last few years, having gained some autonomy in the scope of political economy in the media industry. We are aware that a conclusion limited to the segment of newspapers will not be sufficiently conclusive, since digital and audiovisual media have been steadily increasing their influence in society, so we see this research as a starting point – not the arrival – to probe the study of the media industry and the media system in a perspective of ownership concentration." @default.
