- W2231198006 abstract "This review covers significant developments in the field of microwave-assisted extraction (MAE) published in the open literature till December 2013. A total of 53 chemistry and Sci-tech databases were searched looking for ‘microwave-assisted extraction’ in the title. Web of Knowledge retrieved 2976 references from which 2689 were articles and 254 were reviews. Sci Search retrieved 889 references for the period 1990–2013 but there were no MAE publications prior to 1993. CAB Abstracts retrieved 686 followed by Pascal 600, EU Compendex 598 and EMBASE 586. The number of publications involving use of MAE between 2000 and mid-year 2013 increased linearly whereas the number of citations of this technology increased exponentially reaching almost 2200 citations in 2012. One hundred and ten countries embraced the use of this technology with China, Spain, United States, France, and Canada leading the number of publications using this technology (i.e., China 23%, Spain 19%, United States 8.7%, France 4.5%, and Canada 4.2%). Although a large number of publications address the conventional pollutants, more recent publications that will be discussed here are addressing emerging pollutants such as flame retardants, pharmaceutical and personal care products, and perfluorinated compounds. For more information on this technology and other extraction techniques the reader should consult the comprehensive texts on MAE (Kingston, H. M.; Haswell, S. J. Microwave-Enhanced Chemistry ; American Chemical Society: Washington, DC, 1997; Chemat, F.; Cravatto, G. Microwave-Assisted Extraction for Bioactive Compounds: Theory and Practice ; Springer: New York, 2013; Dean, J. R. Extraction Techniques in Analytical Sciences ; Wiley: New York, 2009). In this review, theoretical considerations in MAE will be covered first and will be followed by a description of both commercial and noncommercial systems, specific applications, and future trends in MAE. Because of the large number of specific applications, the authors chose to reference review articles on specific applications, rather than all the articles published during this period. The MAE technology was officially included in the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) Method 3546 as well as in several American Society for Testing and Materials (ASTM) methods D 5765–05, D 6010–12, D 7210–13 and the Consumer Products Safety Commission (CPSC) method CH-C1001-09.3 (McManus, B.; Horn, M.; Smith, S.; Lockerman, B.; LeBlanc, G. www.chromatographyonline.com (November 2013)." @default.
