Much of the managerial change in the public sector has been harmful to effective engineering practice. On the other hand, there are other trends that could cause a resurgence of the profession as engineers learn to adapt to a world where the value they add to enterprise, and their personal performance, are the measures of success. Some of the issues of managerial change are addressed in relation to the survival, and the renaissance, of engineering as an organised profession.
