- W223169618 abstract "Publisher Summary This chapter discusses calcitonin gene peptides and bone metabolism. Calcitonin is a well-conserved hormone with a neuropeptide similar to human calcitonin being present in primitive chordates, which date before the evolution of the bony fish, as well as in the brains of amphibians and reptiles. Receptors for calcitonin have been identified in diverse tissues including rat bone, kidney, and brain; human lymphocytes; human breast and lung cancer cells; and human spermatozoa. Soon after the discovery of calcitonin, it was established that the hormone exerted a direct inhibitory effect on resorption in cultured embryonic rat long bones. Calcitonin also appears to exert an inhibitory effect on the recruitment of osteoclast-like cells in vitro. The avian ultimobranchial gland secretes a highly potent teleost-type calcitonin. In a study, the serial transplantation of rat medullary thyroid carcinoma cell lines containing and secreting large amounts of calcitonin was observed to result in tumors in which calcitonin biosynthesis was decreased more than tenfold." @default.
