- W2232215 abstract "Direct measurements were made of the surface temperature of commercial- grade Nb during oxidation in air at 650, 795, and 900 deg C and of Zr at 900 deg C. The measurement accuracy was plus or minus 3 deg C. Within 5 to 10 sec after Nb specimens were introduced into a furnace with a temperature of 650, 795, or 900 deg C, the surface temperature of the specimens rapidly rose 10, 80, or 110 deg C, respectively, above the ambient temperature and after a few seconds dropped back. In the case of Zr, the increase was 115 deg C; it occurred after a 20-sec heating and lasted a considerably shorter time than in Nb, probably because of the high protective properties of Zr oxides. The magnitude of overheating is stated to depend on many factors, such as the oxidation rate, heat of oxide forraation, area-to-mass ratio of the specimnen, specific heat, heat conductivity, and condition of the specimen surface, all of which must be considered in studying the kinetics of oxidation of active metals.
