- W2233139150 abstract "Injuries from both accidental and experimental contact with the southern Australian marine stinging sponges Neofibularia mordens Hartman and Lissodendoryx sp. are reported. Contact with fresh Neofibularia causes a high incidence of dermatitis, the lesions usually lasting weeks or longer, to a maximum of nine months. After freezing for four years, thawed Neofibularia remains quite toxic. Some toxicity remains after drying for four years; 78-year-old specimens toxic in 1890 are no longer toxic. Dry sponge, whether fresh or old, is non-toxic; wetting is necessary to activate the toxic agent. The toxic agent is partially resistant to boiling or immersion in soap or formaldehyde solution. An attempt to demonstrate circulating antibody to the sponge by enhancement of response on skin contact after intradermal injection of serum from a sensitive subject into two volunteers was unsuccessful. Thawed Neofibularia (frozen four years) on the rabbit eye causes acute inflammation of the conjunctiva and periorbital tissues, leading to iritis, corneal clouding and ultimate blindness. It is considered that Neofibularia is potentially dangerous to the human eye, e.g., by accidental rubbing by divers or beachcombers. Lissodendoryx sp. is also a contact irritant, but causes lesser lesions both to human skin and rabbit eye. In rabbit eye it causes only transient conjunctivitis without permanent effect. Another irritating sponge genus, Tedania, also occurs in Australian and New Zealand waters." @default.
