- W2234174516 abstract "The design of foundations for structures that are placed in the Great Barrier Reef (GBR) is uncertain since the structural strength of calcareous soils is relatively poorly understood. Furthermore, there is an urgent need to develop environment friendly moorings to cater for the increasing numbers of boats casting anchors and dragging their chains on popular GBR sites. Grouted screw anchors, permanently installed into the seafloor, is one such system that has attracted recent international attention. Objectives of the study that are described in this paper are; to design land based and laboratory tests that will assist in the accurate modelling of the performance of full scale anchors in both siliceous and calcareous materials; to determine ultimate and monotonic capacities, both uplift and lateral, and monitor the response of the anchors to loads; to determine the effect of cyclic loading on anchor load resistance; and to derive load-displacement relationships for uplift, lateral and cyclic loading. As well as describe the concepts behind grouted screw anchoring, this paper will present and discuss test results including the accurate recording of load applications and resulting displacements in siliceous (terrigenous) sands by applying monotonic and cyclic loading. The Reef Collaborative Research Centre (CRC) in collaboration with local industry (Pacific Marine Group (PMG)) designed and constructed a land based test bed to test the grouted screw anchor. Eight test anchors were subjected to uplift, lateral and cyclic loads; such cyclic loads in prototype conditions result from wind and wave actions. Load test equipment was designed and fabricated to allow monotonic and lateral load tests and cyclic load tests at different cyclic load levels to be carried out. Results indicate cyclically applied loads may reduce the anchor ultimate load capacity. Further testing is recommended to confirm the overall impact of the performance of the anchors." @default.
