- W2234828938 abstract "Summary In an earlier paper (F aensen -T hiebes 1992 a), the behaviour of gas-exchange under controlled conditions was investigated in order to describe the ecophysiological adaptation of Meliotus to dry sites. The behaviour of gas exchange in the field is described here. Therefore on two ruderal sites in Berlin the daily course of assimilation and transpiration in summer was recorded. Melilotus starts to close the stomata very soon at midday as a reaction to larger deficits of water-vapour in the air (starting about at 20 mbar), even so the xylem potential is still higher than − 1.4 MPa. If xylem potential decreases during a drought period, then the lowering of stomatal conductance starts earlier and proceeds to a lower value. Harvesting the biomass of Melilotus at this site shows that this is a quite productive site for Melilotus , although it is admittedly low in productivity for perennial species." @default.
