- W2234930897 abstract "This chapter focuses on the adverse effects associated with the use of gastrointestinal drugs and drugs used in gallstone management. Little new information has emerged in the past year about antacids, a well-tried group of preparations. Stewart and his colleagues found that 19% of men and 13% of women in an ambulatory elderly population were takers of such drugs. As noted in a recent review, the withdrawal of bendectin represents a triumph for illogical belief over informed opinion. The publication of case-reports describing fetal anomalies in takers, which has continued, has done nothing to resolve difficulties—rather the reverse. Cimetidine binds weakly to androgen receptors and gynecomastia is an occasional clinical adverse effect, but becoming more common when high doses have to be used in treating patients with the Zollinger–Ellison syndrome. Both cimetidine and ranitidine bind to hepatocyte Cytochrome P450 and therefore have the potential to retard Phase 1 of drug metabolism." @default.
