The family were Quaker dissenters which barred certain social avenues but Roger was still set on a very predictable and mandarin course: Sunninghill in 1877; Clifton College in 1881; King's College, Cambridge in 1885. His First in the Natural Science Tripos of 1887 and 1888 pointed toward a successful beginning to a career in science. But Fry had set off in other directions, moved by friends such as C.R. Ashbee and John Ellis McTaggart and the teaching of John Henry Middleton to consider a life in painting. With the grudging support of his family, he pursued his studio training and his deepening interest in the art of the early Italian Renaissance. In 1899 his first writings on Italian art began to appear, and he soon came to be known as an expert in a field then dominated by Bernard Berenson. The world of criticism and connoisseurship brought him many opportunities. Though he did not receive the Slade Professorship at Oxford and though his painting never received public acclaim, he began to move into the higher reaches of the artistic world: regular writing for the Burlington Magazine and other prestigious journals; friendship with Berenson; a stormy but successful curatorship from 1906 to 1910 at New York's Metropolitan Museum; an offer of the directorship of the National Gallery; numerous commissions to evaluate and authenticate paintings. This set the stage for his leap into notoriety with the two Post-Impressionist Exhibitions (1910-11, 1912). The next two decades until his death were rich and varied.
