- W2236774927 abstract "Blood and urine are the conventional specimens to document drug exposure. However, in cases of drug-facilitated crime, a hair sample is necessary to complement these analyses as it permits differentiation of a single exposure from chronic use of a drug by segmentation of the hair for a stated growth period. Moreover, due to a frequent long delay between event and police declaration, hair can be the only solution to a lack of corroborative evidence of a committed crime. Besides the classic sexual assault and robbery cases, an increase of situations were a drug was used just to obtain sedation has been observed, particularly in cases involving children. The interpretation of the findings can be an issue, as the pharmacology of drugs is different in adults. Like other types of domestic violence, knowledge about elder abuse until recently has been based on relatively few groups and thus was tenuous in nature. It appears that this specific problem is largely unreported and it is estimated, for example in the United States, that approximately 1 to 2% of elderly persons living in their own homes are abused physically, emotionally, sexually and/or financially. Abuse occurs across all socioeconomic, racial and religious groups. It is considered that mental abuse and neglect are more frequent, but physical maltreatment such as beating, pushing, kicking and possibly sexual abuse is also reported. In addition, stealing of money and property is noted. Few reports deal with administration of drugs to the elderly for profit. Benzodiazepines, neuroleptics and opiates have been suggested. These intentional intoxications are generally committed with the aim of robbery. This chapter will focus on the difficulties and the specificities of drug exposure in cases dealing with children and elderly persons." @default.
