- W2236974228 abstract "The eruption of the Etna volcano lasted from October 2002 to January 2003 and has been marked both from severe effusive-explosive activity and very impressive ash emissions, sometimes reaching more than 4.700 m above sea level. In Catania city, at the foot of the volcano, and in surrounding small towns, the phenomena has been very impressive as the values of ash fallout on some days reached about 2,5 Kg/m2. Owing to the amount of ash fallout there has been large and marked economic damage for agriculture and transport services both by road and by air: it is enough to evaluate the economic damage to know that there has been the loss of use of the International Airport of Catania for a long time and that air traffic has been limited only to light-day hours for a long time to. In addition to economic damage, people did not take into consideration the biological damage that might be caused to the health of people breathing air containing large concentrations of fine dusts; PM10, PM 2.5 and PM 1.0, for significant periods It may be that this problem, that affected about 700,000 inhabitants of the Catania area, has been underestimated by the Authorities owing to an incorrect evaluation both of dimension and concentrations of ash fall-out and because the negative effects are not at once evident since accurate information is not made available regarding the exteriorisation of the potential pathologies. The authors aim to verify the health risk by carrying out a campaign of measurements of PMi concentrations during the eruption. By comparison analysis between data of PMi registered by public environmental steady stations both before and during eruption time, and that those measured in-situ by portable surveying equipment during Etna eruption, people pointed out some interesting results. The paper, therefore, wants to show the results of surveying and the correlation between the trend of PMi concentration and the probably of arising of pathogenic effects on man to the aim to suggest to Civil Protection Agency (CPA) the way of interventions of control to bring into action to safeguard people health in the ill-fated and probable occurrence of recur of volcano eruption." @default.
