- W223861180 abstract "The Heart of a Pastor: A Life of Edmond Lee Browning. By Sheryl A. KujawaHolbrook. (Cincinnati: Foreword Movement, 2010, Pp. xxiv, 414. $19.95, paper.) This is not a disinterested book; Sheryl Kujawa-Holbrook served for ten years during Edmond Lee Browning's term as presiding bishop as the Episcopal Church's director of youth ministries. Nor is it a disinterested review; I know both Ed and Patti Browning and have enormous admiration for their ministries. That said, I consider this biography, written with the full cooperation of the Brownings, to be a splendid record and testimony to their life and the role both played in the recent history of the Episcopal Church, the Anglican Communion, and the global religious community. Thanks to this book, those of us who met Browning after his election as presiding bishop can see how the early years of his ministry shaped his understanding of what the church is for. Browning's seminary education at the School of Theology at Sewanee was interrupted by a crisis over the school's policy of racial segregation; like the faculty and most of the student body, he left the seminary but returned to participate in its healing after it agreed to desegregation. Perhaps it was that formative experience that made him permanently committed to a church and world in which there are no outcasts and also to reconciliation among those who differ, even about the most important aspects of Christian faith. One of the strengths of this biography is that it helps the reader understand how each stage of Browning's ministry helped prepare him for what was to come next: the first years as a parish priest in Texas, the awakening of a call to overseas mission which led the Browning family to the island of Okinawa, and in swift succession, service as bishop of Okinawa, bishop-in-charge of the Convocation of American Churches in Europe, a two-year stint as the Episcopal Church's executive for national and world mission, and, at last, election as bishop of Hawaii. Each of those ministries in its way helped him learn the delicate skills necessary to work in contexts of diversity, as well as confronting the reality that the church cannot be faithful without addressing the great political issues that form the broad context of ministry. As bishop of Okinawa he prepared the diocese for its return from American jurisdiction to the Nippon Sei Ko Kai, one of many significant actions towards the empowerment of people who had experienced discrimination in many forms. Asked to remain as bishop, he replied, way. This was not to be a colonial church, whose leadership does not lead it, or a church that embodied the second-class citizenship of the Okinawan people in the eyes of the Japanese (73). Kujawa-Holbrook points out that Browning's own experience profoundly shaped his perspectives on overseas mission, and he challenged practices of control and domination as well as the traditional role of the missionary (97). Indeed, one of the strengths of this book is the emphasis it gives to Browning's experience of, and passion for, the mission of the church, understood in its broadest and deepest sense. In 1985 Browning was elected presiding bishop, a post he served for twelve years. Kujawa-Holbrook titled the chapter which describes Browning's election Outcasts. No one who reviews the years of his term as presiding bishop can doubt its appropriateness. While his use of the phrase no outcasts is most remembered in relation to Browning's efforts towards the full inclusion of gay and lesbian people in the life of the church, it can also apply to the many other groups for whom claiming the promises of their baptism involved a struggle against discrimination and exclusion: racial and ethnic minorities, women, young people, the victims of HIV/ AIDS. …" @default.
