- W2240153624 abstract "In recent studies of the miracles, many New Testament scholars dismiss the nature miracles as legendary. By 'nature' miracles, we are referring to the episodes of Jesus stilling the storm (Mk 4:37-41; Mt 8:23-27; Lk 8:22- 25), walking on water (Mk 6:48-51; Mt 14:25; Jn 6:19-21), feeding the multitudes (Mk 6:34-44 [Mt 14:15-21; Lk 9:12-17; Jn 6:5-13]; Mk 8:1-9 [Mt 15:32-38]), cursing the fig tree (Mk 11:12-14, 20-24; Mt 21:18-22), changing water into wine ( Jn 2:1-11), orchestrating miraculous catches of fish (Lk 5:1-11; Jn 21:1-14), and endorsing payment of the Temple tax with a shekel from a fish's mouth (Mt 17:24-27). In examining this subset of the miracles within a wider discussion of Jesus' deity, we are not thereby suggesting that the miracles primarily function as proofs of Jesus' divinity. To be sure, there were other 'divine men' in antiquity such as Apollonius of Tyana and it has been argued that Jesus' presentation as a miracle-worker in the gospels belongs to this purported literary genre. But the so-called 'divinity' of such figures in antiquity was more demonstrated by their wisdom than by their miracles and, significantly, their literary rendering postdates the New Testament period. Moreover, in a Jewish context, the Synoptic healing miracles and exorcisms point to the 'in-breaking' of the eschatological Kingdom of God in Jesus' ministry and highlight the credentials of his messianic status in the shift of the ages (Mt 11:1-6; 12:28; Mark 3:27 et par.; Luke 11:20; cf. Isa 35:5-6). Why, then, are New Testament scholars almost universally sceptical regarding the 'nature miracles', whereas Jesus' reputation as a healer and exorcist is seldom questioned?" @default.
