- W2240802058 abstract "The Chianti area in the Siena Province comprehends 4 municipalities: Castellina in Chianti, Castelnuovo Berardenga, Gaiole in Chianti and Radda in Chianti. In the district more than one-third of available farmed area is dedicated to vineyards, as compared to a provincial average of 9%. Agriculture is, therefore, the major input to the local economy, followed only by tourism. The work presented in this paper is an emergy analysis of the agriculture organization in the Chianti district with the aim of assessing its actual level of sustainability. Emergy analysis and its indices, stressing the relationship between renewable resources and nonrenewable ones, have been widely applied to evaluate sustainability of various systems included agriculture. Results obtained show a management of agriculture activities respectful of natural resources in view of the fact that the use of nonrenewable inputs is very low (renewable to nonrenewable input ratio is 1 .S). In general sustainability of agriculture has to be related with amount of energy and materials used to exploit local resources, therefore with the intensity of the productivity. In order to better estimate local level of sustainability we compared the Chianti area with another Italian rural district characterized by a far more intensive form of agriculture. Overall the results indicate that the development of the area is quite in accordance with the principles of sustainability." @default.
