- W2241019462 abstract "The leaching of Yallourn brown coal fly ash by 2M hydrochloric acid (HCl) was investigated in this paper. Yallourn coal fly ash is dominated by magnesioferrite (MgFe2O4) and maghemite (gamma-Fe2O3). A series of sequential leaching experiments was carried out, utilizing both weakly acidic (buffer) and strongly acidic conditions to observe the range of conditions required for the dissolution of crystalline phases present in the fly ash. Subsequently, HCl leaching experiments were performed at atmospheric pressure from 20 degreesC to 150 degreesC. The maximum percentage of Mg, the target metal in this study, reached 53.4% at 100 degreesC after 60 minutes of leaching, compared to only 38.3% at room temperature. A further increase in leaching temperature to 150 degreesC did not increase Mg extraction yield. A transition was observed between 90 degreesC and 100 degreesC where the composition of MgFe2O4 decreases by 4.3 wt% upon the successful cleaving of the ferrite chemical bonds." @default.
