- W2241330221 abstract "Current online or real time optimization (RTO) techniques employ steady state optimization. They have undergone much advancement during the last decade and the industrial sector has realized the potential benefits from these techniques. Industrial applications of steady state RTO have been reported in the literature, especially in oil refining, with a consequent significant increase in profits. Although the various steady state online optimization strategies are somewhat different in terms of their algorithms, almost all present the same benefit in terms of profit. Processes with slow dynamics, frequent disturbances and high uncertainty in the model parameters are not good candidates for the application of steady state RTO due to the slow execution of the RTO loop in the presence of uncertainty. This paper presents a comparative evaluation of several current online optimization techniques. The real time evolution (RTE) technique (Sequeira et al. 2004, Comput. Chem. Eng., vol. 28, no. 5, pp. 661-672), which is presented in the literature as an alternative to conventional steady state RTO, has also been explored. The RTE results were compared with two steady state RTO strategies, one using PID control only and another using a model predictive control (MPC) layer. We also briefly investigated an MPC controller with 'soft constraints'. The final results show that an improvement in operational profit can be made by careful selection of the control strategy." @default.
