- W224148927 abstract "Observations of atmospheric neutral sodium reveal a detailed wave-like structure in the altitude profile of sodium. Two possible mechanisms are suggested to account for these wavelike features; gravity wave perturbations and the wind shear mechanism. To lest these mechanisms nearly simultaneous measurements of the wind and sodium density in the 80–100km altitude region were made during January 18–19 and March 14–15, 1980 using the Urbana meteor radar and lidar systems. This paper presents these observations and discusses the results in light of the two proposed mechanisms. The results show some agreement between the altitude of maximum sodium density and the altitude of the zero wind node, lending some support to the theory of the wind shear mechanism for the downward sweeping of ionization. Reconstruction of the neutral atmosphere perturbation density profile from meteor wind harmonics are made using the polarization relationships. The resulting atmospheric density perturbations exhibit similar features with the small-scale fluctuations apparent in the sodium data. These wave-like features are consistent with the gravity wave model studies of Shelton et al. (1980)." @default.
