- W2241667040 abstract "The close of the twentieth century with it a clear urgency to evaluate the role of Spanish/English traslation and interpretation in the United States. Statiscally deemed by the most recent US census as the largest minority in the country, hispanics have made great strides in assimilating into American culture; however, many menbers of this group have not yet acquired and adequate proficiency level in the English language to be able to function fully and independently in their newly adopted nation. Further, in order to succeed in a global soiety, many non-Spanish-speaking individuals find it necessary to appeal to Spanish-speakers in their own language. To assist in briding these linguistic gaps, the number of formal programs to trin translators and interpretrs, along with the number of individuals graduating form these programs, has surged, but not rapidly enough to keep up with the country?s growing linguistic needs. Subsequently, many self-proclaimed but untrained translators and interpreters, who are somewhat proficient in both languages, have emerged to join the ranks of the formally-prepared linguits, resulting in a professional community composed of a hodge-podge of menbers in which the formally trained translators and interpretres are often undervalued and unfairly compensated. This is due in great part to downward wage pressure resulting from lower fees charged by untrained colleagues, whose work is often substandard, Therefore, a greater effort must be exerted to bring this to to the attention of a public that increasingly relies on the services provided by the professionals in this field, and to transform translation and interpretation in the United States into a more highly respectable end viable carrer in the new century." @default.
