Metalinguistic tools such as genre and register are useful because they enable teachers and their students to talk about linguistic differences between one text and another and to use knowledge of text variation in producing texts which are appropriate to 'purpose, situation and audience'. This paper focusses on two features of the functional metalanguage that make it useful for literacy education, particularly in TESOL classrooms. Firstly, there is praxis. The tools of genre and register have been adapted to and shaped by their contexts of use. Classroom applications of the metalanguage have influenced both linguistic theory and practice, and the evolutionary process has been ongoing. Secondly, over the course of these classroom applications, the tools have been increasingly used as 'mid-level generalizations' (Gee, 2000) which operate somewhere between overly general notions such as 'essay' or 'report' and the specifics of particular texts. This paper shows how the combination of genre (the global structure of a prototypical text type) and register (patterns of meaning related to a particular choice of field, tenor and mode) offers teachers four ways of tackling literacy development. The metalanguage has proved increasingly useful in classrooms containing students who are speakers of other languages. The paper explores these two features in two classroom sites: a primary school in inner western Sydney and a secondary school in south western Sydney.
