- W2242602119 abstract "A major component of centralized traffic controls systems are an extensive communications network. Until the recent advent of Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS), the data exchange requirements consisted of a series of command and receive messages and status monitoring messages between the central computer system and the intersection controllers. More often than not, the communications medium consisted of telephone-type twisted-pair cable, which allowed a central computer to communicate with up to eight intersections per two-pair channel at 1,200 bits per second. The systems of today have become much more sophisticated. Instead of simply controlling signals to progressively move traffic, traffic engineers are now managing traffic. New tools and technology have recently become available to the traffic industry to assist in this process, namely video monitoring, incident detection and dynamic message signs. These new tools have placed increased demands on communication networks. Similarly, our changing cultural environment and technological advances such as the Internet have also increased the data or information exchange demands for a fast, dependable and efficient local and nation-wide communications network. As a result of extensive bandwidth capability, fiber optic cable has become the communication medium of choice. The demand for information has created a large number of suppliers in the communications industry and the cost of fiber optic cable has continued to decrease as its widespread use has increased. However, the costs of installing a new communications network can be very high, if not prohibitive. The incremental cost of increasing the fiber count in a cable can be considered to be minimal when compared to the installation costs of the cable itself. This has prompted many utilities and governmental agencies to pool their resources and share the costs of installing one large fiber optic cable and dedicating bundles to specific users." @default.
