- W2243380052 abstract "This paper undertakes a critical examination of the historical underpinnings of music pedagogy from its medieval beginnings through to the present. An argument is presented that music pedagogy has altered little in its purposes and functions over this time, and that utilitarian socio-political influences have been paramount in the evolution of music pedagogy from the very beginning. The point is argued that the only significant new development to occur in a thousand years was the introduction into schools during the 1960s and 1970s of children composing in the classroom. Further, it is charged that art music of the 20th century has failed to reach the classroom to any significant degree. The implications are that music education has no clearly defined purpose other than its historically defined socio-political functions." @default.
