- W2243384787 abstract "The aim of this study was to identify the factors that affect the implementation of practice-based continuing medical education (CME) in particular clinical audit in Divisions of General Practice. A case study methodology was used to explore in-depth, the experiences of two Divisions of General Practice with a background in providing practice- based CME. Multiple sources of evidence were used, including reviews of reports and semi-structured individual and focus group interviews with general practitioners (GPs) (n=28) and non-GP program staff (n=19). Divisional policies on education, the organisational structure, management and operations were factors influencing the success of this type of CME. Clear program strategies underpinned the integration of education with the population health programs. In addition, Divisional staff who developed the practice-based activities knew their stuff in regard to content of the program areas, educational principles and the GPs who were the targets of the educational activities. A carefully established rationale for the audit, planning, promotion, structure and format of the audit material, support while running the audit and specific feedback and reinforcement strategies resulted in successful uptake and outcomes. It is recommended that Divisions of General Practice that consider CME as a corer function attend to an organisational framework based on stated policies and objectives regarding delivery of CME. This needs to be based on an understanding of adult educational principles and integrated into Division programs. Staff with educational skills are important factors in involving GPs in practice-based activities. Attention to the process of developing delivering and reinforcing the educational activities is more likely to lead to success." @default.
