- W2244216964 abstract "Music making in African society has a social function; unlike in Western culture, people in Africa perform music with each other rather than merely for each other. It is upon such a framework of African music that I base my music teaching in Australia. This paper outlines the importance of cultural context and identity in professional learning regarding African music at my tertiary institutions and my involvement with a community choir. This paper reflects on my teaching at Deakin University and my involvement with a choir called South African Voices in Melbourne. I do not take an anthropological or an ethnornusicological approach to African music. Rather, as music educator I provide a space for multicultural music to transcend social and cultural boundaries. Music knows no boundaries” and “songs from different countries, sung in their original tongues have opened gates to the understanding of culture” (Pohjola. 1993, p. 112). Masakhane is an ‘Nguni’ South African word which literally means ‘let us build together’. This term aptly describes the importance of building musical understanding if not ‘we do our students [and choir members] a disservice when we prepare them to live in a society that no longer exists” (Nieto, 1992, p. 281)." @default.
