- W224423285 abstract "Shipbuilding is a project and customer driven industry with complex processes. The shipbuilding market is dependent on many other markets, such as world trade, world energy demand, demand for infrastructural development, international and national environmental and safety standards.World shipbuilding capacity has tripled during the last few years. The industry has therefore experienced an increase in competition during the last decade which has resulted in a broad focus on improvement, productivity and efficiency. Most new shipbuilding orders are assigned to countries in Asia. Ulstein Yard, located in the small town of Ulsteinvik, Norway is the case company of this thesis. They produce complex and highly advanced vessels for the offshore industry. The situation inthe shipbuilding market has led Ulstein Yard to focus on increasing project performance. Measuring, analyzing and improving project performance is an important part of increasing companies competitiveness. Without measuring it‘s impossible to improve. A project performance measure tells us how we are doing on the way to achieving project success. It also provides information about the project, needed in order to make the best decision. Performance measures also facilitate a common understanding about what is important in the project. The goal of this thesis is to enhance/improve/better control of complex projects, such as shipbuilding. This is achieved by presenting relevant theory within project control, mapping the project processes at the case company and developing a system description for a future dashboard system that shows project status and progress of a shipbuilding project. From a practical point of view, this thesis contributes to overcome one of the key challenges of shipbuilding projects, namely coordination and control. The study also contributes to enhanced ship project control by pointing out the issues that should be considered. A literature study was conducted in order to present relevant theory of project control. During the literature study it was recognized that a characterization of shipbuilding projects was needed to understand the challenges a project manager for a shipbuilding project is faced with. Several authors have established methods for characterizing projects. Combining these led to this characterization of shipbuilding projects in general; they are unique, complex, large in size, global and have long duration, high cost, high risk, require high levels of technology and highly skilled workers. These characteristics make with out doubt the work of shipbuilding project managers quite complex. In order for a project manager to have control of his/her project and in order to know if project objectives are achieved, projects must be measured. Having a universal checklist for project measures is recognized as impossible during this thesis, because of the varying natures and behaviors of projects. Project performance measurement categories relevant for shipbuilding have been established in this thesis. The categories have been described and examples of performance measurement within each category have been given. The case study approach is applied to identify important elements of ship project control andthe key elements that should be a part of a project performance dashboard for project managers in shipbuilding. A single case study gives depth to the research, but generalization from a single case must be done with care. At the case company there is a need for better reporting and analysis of projects, to increaseproject performance. Establishing structured project processes and defining a set of performance measures for visualization can result in better reporting and analysis. A structured approach for developing performance measurement systems has been used to map the project performance dashboard environment. Dashboards are efficient tools for visualization. A system description of a dashboard for project manager has been developed, based on the literature study, interviews with Ulstein employees, mapping of the project processes at Ulstein Yard and discussion with the thesis supervisor. It states the relevant measurements to show on a dashboard for project managers at the case company. A demo of a dashboard has been made in excel, based on a template found during the literature study. It is made only as a descriptive tool explaining how the desired information canbe presented. The dashboard solution includes showing progress of important activities, status of main equipment, the project plan in the form of a Gantt diagram, hours used in the project,a burn-down chart that presents planned versus actual progress. The dashboard also presentsthe number of change requests and their prioritization. Benefits of performance dashboards are recognized in the literature study and can be summarized as the ability to communicate strategy, increase visibility, increase coordination, increase motivation, give a consistent view of the business and enable users to deliver adequate information for reporting and analysis. The dashboard has been developed for the project managers at the case company and relies on data from already existing ICT systems. The development of the dashboard is done following a structured approach for performance measurement system design. A dashboard showing project status at a glance can ease the work of a project manager by providing relevant information needed for decision-making, reporting and analysis. There is also a great deal of challenges when developing a dashboard solution. The number one issue is to ensure valid and consistent data. Without valid and consistent data the dashboard is useless. The input data for the dashboard is in this case gathered from the ERP and PLM system already in use at case company. Extracting the relevant data and treating it in order toget the information needed is also a challenge. When developing and implementing a dashboard, having support from the users is important, the users should therefore be part of the both the development process and the implementation process." @default.
