- W2244244804 abstract "The purpose of this study was to compare the efficacy of absorbable and non-absorbable sutures in canine perineal herniorrhaphy. In eight confirmed cases of perineal hernia, standard perineal herniorrhaphy was performed under general anaesthesia and the dogs were grouped (n=4 each) according to the suture material used. Post-treatment antibiotic course as well as dietary management was followed and topical antiseptic dressing was applied on the wounds. Recurrence was reported in all the cases (100%) of group 1, where absorbable suture material (chromic catgut and vicryl) was used while only in one case (25%) of group 2, where nonabsorbable suture material (monofilament non-braided silk) was used; and average recurrence period in group 1 and 2 was 4 and 7 months postsurgery, respectively. In all the dogs a significant decrease in neutrophil count at three-week interval compared with the pretreatment value was observed. On the basis of the results of the current study, it is recommended that non-absorbable suture may be preferred for standard perineal herniorrhaphy." @default.
