Among geologists and pedologists there is some debate as to whether tepetate is a geological formation (consolidation by either high temperatures and pressures or a fine clay-loam matrix) or the result of pedocementation. In this work tepetates were classified as geological and pedological based on the existing relationship between cementing materials and the porous space. It was assumed that the process of removal of the cementing compounds from the supersaturated solution in the porous space is the basis of pedocementation. In the geocementation there is no relationship among cementing agents and porous spaces in tepetate. It is also demonstrated that the morphology of cementing compounds is determined by the same processes which caused their removal from the solution. The following cementing compounds in tepetates from the state of Mexico, Mexico, are described: carbonates plus amorphous silica under the form of chalcedony-like mineral, and carbonates associated with either iron or manganese hydroxide. Each of the aforementioned cementing agents showed a different morphology depending on whether it was present alone or associated with some other compound. Hardness was different for each cementing compound. Cementation by carbonates associated with amorphous silica and iron manganese hydroxides appeared to produce the greatest hardness of tepetate. Production of this type of cementing compound was a result of pedocementation." @default.
