• W2245144928 abstract "Issue addressed: The South Australian Smoking and Health Project ( SASHP) was approached by the Regency Institute of Technical and Further Education (TAFE) in Adelaide, South Australia, to provide advice and assistance with the issue of smoking on campus. The SASHP is a project jointly supported by the Anti-Cancer Foundation and the National Heart Foundation with funding from Living Health. SASHP is the peak tobacco control organisation in South Australia and runs the annual Quit Campaign in September each year. It was perceived by management at Regency that a relatively high percentage of students smoked and that a significant number began to smoke after beginning their studies. This brief report describes some of the results from a cross-sectional survey of Schools at Regency, which was designed to gather information about smoking behaviour, attitudes and knowledge that would inform an intervention on campus. Methods: A cross-sectional survey of students the Regency Institute of TAFE determined smoking prevalence, stage of change and preferred assistance to quit. Results: Smoking prevalence varied significantly between Schools at Regency; however, there was no significant difference in terms of cigarettes smoked per day, stage of change or preferred assistance to quit. Smokers were in the first six to eight years of their smoking careers and the vast majority were not heavy smokers. While a total of 43.5 per cent were starting to think about how to change their smoking patterns or taking action to quit, 59.2 per cent preferred no assistance to quit. Conclusions: Young people attending TAFE are at an early stage of their smoking careers, are predominantly low-rate smokers and most are either thinking about or taking action to quit. As such, quitting would be a relatively easier proposition at their stage of life rather than later. The challenge is how best to encourage and support quit attempts among this group. When asked what their preferred form of assistance would be, the majority of smokers opted for no assistance, followed by advice from a doctor or other health professional. This may indicate an approach that encourages and supports unaided quit attempts and taps into medical and student services staff on campus. So what? A significant proportion of young people will attend an Institute of TAFE as a transition from school to work. As such, TAFE campuses are also a venue where large numbers of young people, who may be ambivalent about their smoking, can be assisted to quit. This is one of only a few studies to look closely at smokers attending a TAFE and provides valuable background information in terms of smoking behaviour and preferred assistance to quit.
