- W2245312832 abstract "Friction between equal surfaces of paper under dry, moderate and humid atmospheres was examined, comparing with those of cellulose film and aluminum foil. The paper samples we used are machine-made glassine paper, PPC paper and filter paper, which have smooth, moderate and rough surface respectively. The friction coefficient between cellulosic materials such as paper against paper or film against film increased due to the higher humidity, while the friction of aluminum against aluminum was constant irrespective of surrounding humidity. However the surface wetting with a slight amount of water on aluminum caused rapid increase in the coefficient. It was also found that further wetting remarkably decreased the friction force. This phenomenon could be explained by the capillary force and the lubrication by the water. Thus, the capillary force caused by the slight amount of condensed water between surfaces may remarkably raise friction force. And further, more amount of water may change solid-solid friction to solid-liquid friction which gives lower friction coefficient where the water plays as the lubricant. The mechanism of frictional behavior of cellulosic materials are not exactly the same as aluminum, however, the sharp increase of friction between cellulose films in humid atmosphere was similar to that observed with aluminum foils which were wetted by a slight amount of water. These suggest that the capillary force by the slight amount of water may raise frictional force of cellulosic materials including paper at high humid. On the other hand, the condensed water on paper surface due to high humidity generally brought about a decrease in the surface strength and further caused a peeling of surface fiber, resulting in somewhat lower friction coefficient as shown in case of PPC paper exposed by steam. The friction coefficient between different materials generally gave the intermediate value. However the friction between paper and aluminum foil or cellulose film at humid atmosphere showed various peculiarities such as the higher friction coefficient than the individual coefficient." @default.
