Roger Keele, well known in Houston (Texas) as a coach/accompanist, solo pianist, conductor, composer, and opera director (both musical and stage), has revised six of his works composed between 1979 and 2001 for this publication titled Six Seasonal Songs. Taken in the order published here, the six songs reflect some aspect of the seasons of the year. My Kite of Blue with its running sixteenth notes in the right hand and soaring vocal line celebrates the winds of that make the poet wish to fly along with the blue kite. Secret Love is a short, straightforward, if somewhat coy, song about the familiar experience of secretly falling in love with someone new, often under the influence of spring fever. A somewhat saucy, skipping figure in the piano sets up the feeling of delight in a secret that the voice then picks up as the vocal melody. Summer Fly, a setting of a well known poem by William Oldys, takes a more humorous approach than perhaps the poet intended in his philosophic comparison of the brief life of the fly with our own brief span; nevertheless, it makes an interesting song. The piano is full of figurations that depict the various motions of the fly-a wealth of tone painting. The vocal line also reflects some of the fly's motion with well placed rests. The composer indulges in a certain amount of text repetition that gives further opportunity for tonal and word play. Spring and Fall: To A Young Child joins at least three other settings by American composers (Arthur Farwell, Alexandra Pierce, and Ned Rorem) of this famous poem by Gerard Manley Hopkins. …" @default.
