- W2246232970 abstract "The study reported in this paper summarizes Arkansas' experience with Superpave volumetric mix design using the surface course mixes typical to the State of Arkansas. Eight typical surface course mixes were designed by the Superpave volumetric design method using two typical binders PG 64-22 (AC-30) and PG 76-22 (PMAC-20), for a design traffic of over 100 million Equivalent Single Axle Loads (ESALs) and a temperature level of 44 deg C, respectively resulting in N sub max of 288 gyrations. The height data from the gyratory compaction process were efficiently utilized to backcalculate the bulk specific gravity of the mixes at the 27 design gyration levels and perform mix design for the remaining 27 design gyration levels. The mix design data thus generated were used to critically evaluate the Superpave volumetric mix design procedure. The results indicate that the optimum asphalt content and the Voids in Mineral Aggregate (VMA) remain constant over a range of design gyrations. Statistical analyses of mix design data indicate that: the mix parameters of the mixes having design gyrations within 1-2 gyrations do not differ significantly; an exponential increase in traffic level (within a given temperature environment) does not result in a significant variation in either VMA or Voids Filled with Asphalt (VFA); and the range of temperature selected in the Superpave mix design system seems to be narrow and does not produce mix designs which differ significantly. Additional research, based on a wide range of aggregate blends and binders, is essential to confirm the findings of this study. Should the trends persist, necessary modifications may be essential to the Superpave Gyratory Compactive Effort table to include the gyratory compactive levels which yield mix designs (at different traffic and temperature environment levels) that are significant from a practical standpoint." @default.
