- W2247114630 abstract "Clear effect of positive correlations between oppositely charged pions has been observed for the invariant masses of pion pairs less than 450 MeV. Data analysis has been performed for the reactions: p + C, p + Nb, p + Pb at 800 and 1600 MeV (Diogene Collaboration data); {sup 1}H, {sup 2}H, {sup 4}He, {sup 12}C + propane at 4.2GeV/c per nucleon, p+Ta at l0GeV/c (Dubna, propane bubble chamber data). The effect is strongly target-dependent and increases with the increasing target mass. In order to find a source of the existing correlations the contributions of the final state strong and Coulomb interactions between pions has been evaluated. The influence of the Coulomb interaction between a target nucleus and pions has been estimated as well. A contribution of the known resonance decays has been estimated for the interactions with the heaviest target. These effects cannot explain our observations for the interactions with heavy nuclei. As a possible source of the correlations a shadowing effect due to pion absorption inside nuclear matter has been considered. Observed azimuthal correlations and pion yield dependence on the impact parameter are in agreement with this assumption. To show that the observed pion correlations were caused bymore » nuclear shadowing effects we performed transport calculations with the BUU code. The process of greatest interest here is the creation and reabsorption of pions, which is dominated by the two-step process: N + N {leftrightarrow}N + {Delta} {leftrightarrow} N + N + {pi}. We have found a satisfactory agreement with the data as well as the target mass dependence.« less" @default.
