Organic extracts from passive samplerscan be combined with a variety of bioassay procedures to assessboth the level and the biological potential of watercontaminants. The aim of two year study was the complexassessment of the river ecosystem contamination, especially bycompounds with specific modes of action, and its seasonal andspatial variability. Contamination with ED-active compounds hasbeen assessed in the area of city agglomeration spread in thebasin of two rivers in the Czech Republic with 400,000inhabitants, variety of industrial activities and largewastewater treatment plant. Contamination of aquaticenvironment has been monitored in four sampling campaignsrepresenting spring and autumn seasons with different waterflows. Organic extracts of sediments and two types of passivesamplers (SPMD for hydrophobic contaminants and POCIS for polarpesticides and pharmaceuticals) have been tested in battery ofin vitro bioassays with recombinant yeast and mammalian cellsystems. Biotests showed dioxin-like, (anti)estrogenic and(anti)androgenic potency and in some cases high cytotoxicity ofwaste water from wastewater treatment plant, surface riverwater and sediments. Bioassay assessment provided importantinformation since it can integrate the endocrine disruptivepotency of the present pollutants taking into account alsotheir interactions in the complex mixture.
