- W2247156573 abstract "This paper focuses on identity construction of a group of immigrants that research has not paid much attention to - African immigrant students. Literature in the field suggests that the ways in which Black immigrants identify stem from their strong desire for economic and social advancement and the deeply embedded racial hierarchy that constraints black individuals in the U.S. Ironically, identifying ethnically or nationally comes with its own difficulties and challenges in a society that identifies them primarily through a racial lens. Based on this hypothesis, I seek to answer the following questions, how do African immigrant students identify? Why do they choose to identify the way they do? What implication does this have on their schooling? To answer these questions, I focus on the schooling narratives of the four girls from four different African nations Kenya, Sudan, Tanzania and Zambia. My findings suggested that even though the four girls shared a pan-ethnic identity (African), they appropriated different meanings to what it means to be African. These meanings I argue, were situational and contextual. My goal in this regard is to counter the view that Black students are a monolithic group." @default.
